FrightFest is the must go to film festival for those with a taste for horror. Taking place every August Bank Holiday weekend, London’s West End finds itself invaded by horror enthusiasts from every walk of life.
Those regular attenders out there should take note that the venue for this years festival has changed. The last five years have seen the frightening fun take place in the Empire cinema but the organisation is moving to the Vue cinema. The news was broken via their newsletter earlier this morning. Here’s what they had to say:
We are delighted to announce that Film4 FrightFest this year will be located at the Vue West End.
Why, I hear you ask? What’s wrong with the Empire? Nothing at all. We have had a great five years there and they were fabulous hosts. We are taking the opportunity that the changes at the cinema have given us to shake things up. The Vue has the seats that we need and we already have a relationship with Vue through the All-Nighter. In our discussions and meetings with them in the run up to this announcement, they have gone out of their way to help us, and with this help, we will make this year’s event bigger and better. The partnership we are forging with Vue will be a huge plus for FrightFest in the long term and will give us the scope to expand or contract to meet our needs. It’s the latest chapter in the ongoing process in our vision to make FrightFest one of the best fests in the universe.
They then went onto to explain that things will work slightly differently this year. In the past at the Empire there have been two screens, the main one and the Discovery screen. At Vue they will be taking over five screens, giving three screens to the old ‘main screen’ programme with films showing at the same time on the whole, with the odd film showing in a slightly different order depending on which screen you have tickets for. The other two screens will both be used for the Discovery screen movies:
We will be using five screens this August. This gives us more seats than ever before. The one seat for the festival principal and our programme of must see films isn’t going anywhere. Add to this we have double the number of seats in our Discovery screens.
So, how is it all going to work? We will be using the three largest auditoriums within the complex for our main programme. Think the movies that played in the big Empire. The opening and closing films and selected others will play in these three cinemas at the same time. Otherwise the films will play out in a rolling programme with staggered starting times.
All that you need to do that is different from previous years is make up your mind about what cinema out of the three that you want to sit in. Let us make it clear. You will still see all of the main screen films, just in a different order depending in which screen you choose to sit. Sit back and let them wash over you if that’s all that you want. But why would you want to do that?
The festival has had some varied films premiere at the festival over the years, including MONSTERS, IN FEAR, THE BORDERLANDS, HOSTEL, DRAG ME TO HELL and THE DESCENT.
Tickets don’t go on sale until the 28th June, with the big films that will be showing not announced until somewhere near the beginning of June. They have however released the ticket types and prices already though so have a look below and start saving your pennies horror fans.
