With its ferociously-scrutinized production schedule, the new STAR WARS movie has given rise to a whole Death Star full of rumours. However, Harry Knowles of Ain’t It Cool claims to have bona fide spies in the House of J.J. Abrams and has just revealed the existence of a title for Episode VII.
The title is THE ANCIENT FEAR.
Reportedly it is a reference to a villain played by Max Von Sydow. It’s a reasonable assumption that Von Sydow would be on the Dark Side anyway, following the tradition of casting screen legends such as Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing in previous roles. He could of course be playing a mild-mannered Jedi gardener but I can’t see that at this stage.
Knowles has apparently been keeping this epic nugget to himself for the past month until he could verify the story. In true Obi Wan Kenobi fashion he has been mysterious about his sources and as the confirmation came with a caveat that it was a “working title” we can still take matters with a big sprinkling of salt.
What do you make of THE ANCIENT FEAR? It certainly fits with the old movie serial tone of THE PHANTOM MENACE, though that received its fair share of derision both when announced and when the film finally came out. With practically every fear in sci-fi and fantasy being ancient, is it imaginative enough, or do we like our STAR WARS titles to do exactly what it says on the tin? Either way, EPISODE VII begins production in a few days and all will be revealed in December 2015.
