After it was revealed just yesterday that we would be getting four new DC Comics adaptations on the small screen this autumn (as well as Arrow), Marvel have now made two very exciting announcements.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D received a very mixed response when it began airing last September, and since then has worked extremely hard to regain viewers and general interest in the show. The Marvel series has retained a strong connection to its parent film universe by including numerous references and easter eggs, in addition to special guest appearances from Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Jamie Alexander and Stan Lee. Since then the shows ratings have steadied and viewers have begun returning to the substantially improved science fiction drama. As a result, Marvel and ABC have decided to renew Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D for a second season set to air this autumn.
However that’s not all, as ABC have also given the green light to the long-rumoured and heavily discussed Agent Carter series starring Hayley Atwell. After the character originally appeared in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, before returning in its sequel CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, Peggy Carter has become a firm favourite among fans of the Marvel cinematic universe. Atwell also reprised her role as Carter in the highly acclaimed short film Agent Carter included on the IRON MAN 3 Blu-ray, which is said to be the inspiration for the characters new television show. You can read the official synopsis for the series below:
The story is set in 1946 and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life — Steve Rogers. Inspired by the feature films Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, along with the short Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter.
Although Agent Carter has been given a straight-to-series order, the show will reportedly only consist of around 13 episodes to bridge the gap for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D during its winter hiatus. Both shows are also said to be ‘tied together’ in some form although there are no further details, would it be out of the question for a time travel cross-over? Dominic Cooper has also been very vocal about his desire to reprise his role as Howard Stark in the series, so don’t be surprised to see his face a few times throughout the course of the show.
So what do you think to Peggy Carter joining Agent Coulson on ABC? are you happy about both decisions?
