Almost a year to the day, we reported that CLOVERFIELD’s Drew Goddard was set to take on THE MARTIAN for 20th Century Fox but as he’s been sidelined by SINISTER SIX, the SPIDER-MAN spin off, none other than Ridley Scott is set to take over on this project.
THE MARTIAN is based on the self-published ebook by Andy Weir and centers around a stranded astronaut who has crashed on Mars and must work out a survival plan, so he can return to Earth. Scott is also set to produce alongside Simon Kinberg (X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST) and Aditya Sood (LET’S BE COPS), but the script remains by Goddard, who also had his directorial debut with CABIN IN THE WOODS.
It’s still a very interesting project, despite the initial changes, and I’m always a fan of Scott’s work and he’s currently trying to entice Matt Damon on-board for this possible intense drama-thriller. It’s described by exec’s as being in-between APOLLO 13 and CAST AWAY, so if they can find that niche, grab a bit of GRAVITY and add some Damon then it could work out quite nicely!
