Proving it’s never too late to hop on the game-to-movie bandwagon, Sony have announced a feature film for everyone’s favourite (at some point, a long time ago) spiky blue mammal, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG.
Sony will partner with Japanese animation studio Marza to create the film, which will combine CG and live-action, a la the recent SMURFS movies.
It’s difficult to imagine what exactly a SONIC THE HEDGEHOG film would entail – his traditional side-scrolling adventures would make for a pretty weird experience on screen – but it seems like the kind of project that would be geared towards a younger audience.
Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are on board to write the script. They’re supposedly attempting to capture Sonic’s ‘irreverent tone’, which here likely means ‘completely nonsensical and patronising humour intended to appeal to kids with the attention span of a gnat’.
Hopefully Sony will attempt to do more with the franchise than that, but die-hard fans of classic Sonic are probably past the target audience for what the film will eventually become – hence it seeming such an odd choice for a project.

Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we’re confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him.’
