Why Rob Zombie’s Halloween Movie ’31’ Is Not ‘Halloween’

Rob Zombie 31

Heavy metal legend turned horror movie director Rob Zombie (I always resist the urge to call him Robert Zombie) has been talking about his new film 31, which is set to shoot later in the year. Recently-released teaser images showed a messed-up clown face, not dissimilar to the look of Michael Myers. Zombie rebooted John Carpenter’s Myers character for two HALLOWEENs, but this trail appears to have gone cold, with the hellish helmer revealing his offering will be an original project set on October 31st but bearing no other connection.

Another talking point has been the resemblance of the clown to Captain Spaulding from Zombie’s HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES/THE DEVIL’S REJECTS, which he addressed by saying:

There’s a clown thing in the movie, but it has nothing to do with Captain Spaulding… And what is in the movie doesn’t look like Captain Spaulding either; maybe the people think the poster does, but the movie won’t.

Zombie is heavily-influenced by legendary entries from screamfests past such as THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and moving him onto an established franchise like HALLOWEEN was a natural progression. Just what will “something new” from the director entail? Presumably the 31 of the title doesn’t refer to a number of kittens?  These questions and more will be  answered somewhat bloodily next year.
