Studio Ghibli’s Latest ‘When Marnie Was There’ Trailer

Hayao Miyazaki may have retired (again) after THE WIND RISES, but the studio he co-founded will continue to produce exquisite films. Here in the West we are still waiting for THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA, but Japan will be getting yet another film from Ghibli this summer. That’s favouritism right there. The film, WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE, is based on Joan G. Robinson’s modern classic of the same name in which a girl named Anna moves to a village by the sea and encounters the ghost like Marnie.

The trailer looks beautiful, leaving out all dialogue and focusing on the theme song. Hiromasa Yonebayashi of ARRIETY fame will direct, with a script from Niwa Keiko who has supplied screenplays for OCEAN WAVES and FROM UP ON POPPY HILL. Coming to Japan in July, we’ll probably be waiting a year r two for a release, depending on whether or not the film gets its own English language dub or not.

His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
