20th Century Fox have announced a release date for the long gestating DEADPOOL movie. Deadpool made an appearance in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, but in a highly altered, and much maligned by fans, iteration. The character has long been a fan favourite, unique in that he constantly breaks the fourth wall while realising he is in a comic. How this will translate to film is yet to be seen, but there was that spectacular test footage which featured a motion-capture Deadpool with the voice of Ryan Reynolds, who played the part in the aforementioned X-Men film.
The release date is now 12th February 2016, which is three months before the release of X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Whether the two will be connected in some way remains to be seen, but as 20th Century Fox tries to keep up with the ever-expanding Marvel Universe as well as Sony’s expansion of the Spider-Man world with a number of spin-offs, DEADPOOL could be the unique jewel in the crown.
Tim Miller will direct the project based on a screenplay by ZOMBIELAND writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. In other news, 20th Century Fox are having major release date shuffles, with Michael Fassbender starrer ASSASSIN’S CREED pulled from its 7th August 2015 date with no replacement. The secretive THE FANTASTIC FOUR reboot has now taken up that slot after being moved from 19th June, with PAPER TOWNS being released a month earlier, moving from 31st July 2015 to 19th June.
Does this suggest some uneasiness about certain projects? THE FANTASTIC FOUR has garnered much suspicion after failing to release a single bit of press, media, PR, about one of the year’s biggest films, and with no date for ASSASSIN’S CREED, we have to wonder about the status of that film too.
No matter what though, we can all be excited for DEADPOOL.
