‘Fury’ Director Tapped For ‘Suicide Squad’ Movie!

Suicide Squad.

Not too long ago it was announced that Warner Bros. had earmarked release dates for nine mystery DC Comics adaptations between 2016 and 2020 (not counting BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE). Since then we have discovered that SHAZAM and JUSTICE LEAGUE are likely to occupy two of those dates, although the other seven still remain shrouded in secrecy. However, now we may know the identity of another DC Comics movie currently in production at Warner Bros.

The Suicide Squad may not be quite as well known as some of the other characters to originate from the pages of DC Comics, but they are certainly getting their fair share of attention lately. The criminal super-team has featured in their own direct-to-DVD animated movie earlier this year, and even guest starred in the hugely popular action series Arrow (with a return planned for its third season this fall). Now, David Ayer is reportedly Warner Bros’ first choice to direct a big screen adaptation of the fan-favourite team. Ayer is known for directing dark and gritty films such as TRAINING DAY, END OF WATCH, SABOTAGE and the upcoming FURY starring Brad Pitt and Shia Labeouf.

These are apparently the qualities that have Warner Bros interested in Ayer for their SUICIDE SQUAD adaptation, which would make perfect sense for a slightly edgier and lesser known property like this one. For those that don’t know, the Suicide Squad are a team of elite criminals given a chance for redemption by working for the government on extremely dangerous, life threatening missions. The roster has shifted many times in the past, but popular and frequent members include Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller and Plastique. This report also gels with a rumour last year that Warner Bros was interested in developing superhero movies based on lesser known properties, but at a much lower cost. This would be a brilliant marketing decision for the studio, which would expand their cinematic superhero universe without having to rely solely on Batman and Superman.

What do you think? Are you excited by the possibility of a David Ayer directed SUICIDE SQUAD movie? Or do you think that Warner Bros should just stick to their JUSTICE LEAGUE characters? Let us know in the comments section!
