First Look: Benedict Cumberbatch In Richard III Adaptation ‘Hollow Crown’

There’s no cheeky Sherlock-esque grin in sight as Benedict Cumberbatch takes on Shakespeare’s villainous Richard III for a BBC TV adaptation entitled The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses.

In the image, Cumberbatch sports a rather unkempt and angry look, complete with dark clothing and a stunning black horse for him to ride. Though many people now realise that Shakespeare’s vision of Richard III was perhaps a little harsh, that doesn’t stop the play being adapted and revisited. Cumberbatch’s Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman headed to the stage for the Trafalgar Transformed theatre production earlier this year.

For the production of The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses, Cumberbatch will be joined by an all-star cast that includes another Sherlock co-star, Andrew Scott, along with Dame Judi Dench and Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville.
