Unnerving charisma factory Javier Bardem could be giving Johnny Depp a run for his booty when PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 starts shooting in Australia. The actor is reportedly close to signing up as Jack Sparrow’s latest nemesis, following in the footsteps of Geoffrey Rush, Bill Nighy and Ian McShane. His character will apparently share the supernatural tendencies of Nighy’s tentacle-faced Davy Jones and Rush’s undead pain in the backside Barbossa. Anyone who’s seen Bardem in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN or SKYFALL knows he can do spooky in spades, so Sparrow may have quite a fight on his greasy, no good hands.
Depp and Bardem previously worked together on BEFORE NIGHT FALLS, where the former famously appeared in drag. While the casting has yet to be confirmed, I can’t see the Spanish star dragging his heels too long over the prospect of a sun-drenched escapade messing about in boats. Directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer for Disney, POTC 5 is expected in cinemas July 2017.
