Seldom has a movie phenomenon been as long-lasting and as pervasive as the Ghostbusters franchise. Despite having all the makings of a cult classic (witty banter, bizarre special effects, quirky plot), Ghostbusters has become a cornerstone of movie culture. Released in 1984, Ghostbusters was a hit right out of the gate — and it has continued affecting modern culture ever since.
Ghostbusters Casino Games
Yes, Ghostbusters has even come to the casino — and it’s even available in a 3D version and some select venues. The themed game works very similarly to an ordinary slots game, with a twist — every time you hit a bonus or special event, you can choose from a variety of side games that take place in 3D and, of course, in the Ghostbusters’ universe. And, even better, that jazzy Ghostbusters melody plays throughout your game, spurring you ever onward. Can’t wait until your next trip to Vegas? You can find the best online slots for Ghostbusters-themed casino games at Caesar’s Casino.
Ghostbusters Re-Enactments
Forget plays. Scenes from the Ghostbusters have actually been re-enacted at the New York Public Library for the bemused entertainment of onlookers. The merry pranksters at Improv Everywhere, a national improv group, faithfully created one of the most memorable Ghostbusters scenes and taped the entire experience as a sort of life-imitating-art display. Want to do a re-enactment of your very own? All you need is a few jump suits… and some ghost-fighting equipment. Surely that can’t be hard to find on eBay?
Ghostbusters Video Games
Launched in 2009, the Ghostbusters video game (aptly titled Ghostbusters: The Video Game) was released with little fanfare despite the generally positive reviews. The game, which featured new content, a new plot and CGI scenes which added to the movie’s mythos, was intended to serve as a sort of sequel; all the stars came back, witty quips and all. Unfortunately, the animation and 3D rendering technology of the time just wasn’t up to par, keeping the game from becoming a true classic. On the upside, it is rated Teen for “comic mischief.”
Ghostbusters… Amusement Park?
This one is just a little bittersweet. Back in the 1980s, just after the tremendous release of the Ghostbusters, plans were made to make an incredible amusement park ride. Based on concept art alone, the amusement ride would have been absolutely amazing. Based in Six Flags, it was designed to have strange, weightless rooms, ghost attacks and cart rides. Unfortunately, while it was still being planned Six Flags was transferred to a new owner and the plans fell through.
There’s still more to come for Ghostbusters fans. Ghostbusters III is, amazingly, still in the works and some have even wondered if it may be on the way to becoming a true franchise. Though Ghostbusters II didn’t exactly rake in the big dollars, the sheer amount of Ghostbusters media out there certainly indicates that there is still an interest.
