Last year’s breakout creature-feature, MONSTERS, is tipped to have a sequel, as reported by Total Film today.

The original director, Gareth Edwards, is set to executive produce, alongside Scoot McNairy, who previously played lead character Andrew Kaulder. As previously discussed here on THN, Edwards will helm the new GODZILLA feature, so directing duties on MONSTERS 2 will apparently fall to Brent Bonacorso and Jesse Atlas, who have largely made shorts and commercials until now.

The original MONSTERS, with its guerilla approach and minimal budget, was in fact a very human affair, with the kind of focus on story and character that is rare in big-budget science fiction. Can the new directors retain that aspect, or will we see a shift towards a more mainstream format?
According to Total Film, the budget is to be under $5 miilion, which is still a far cry from the micro-budgeted original. Perhaps this will ensure more monster moments than the first film, which used a very minimalist approach (an issue which divided audiences on a movie named MONSTERS).
Monsters or no monsters, the original is undoubtedly an innovative and fresh look at a popular genre, and let’s hope that can be maintained with the sequel.
Shooting is expected to begin this September in South America.
