Legendary schlock musical THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW had a successful stage to screen transfer, in the process inspiring more cosplay than a thousand Wizard World conventions. Follow up movie SHOCK TREATMENT was a flop, but writer/star Richard O’Brien is planning to set the blood-stained glitterball in motion again with a reworked live version, due to premiere at the King’s Head Theatre in London next year. Though not a direct sequel, the film featured ROCKY HORROR characters Brad and Janet, who became part of a deranged TV broadcast in an age before reality television.
The satirical content is clearly a big draw for reviving the script now. While SHOCK TREATMENT didn’t make a dent at the box office it does have its own following. The production cast numerous performers who would go on to greater things, such as the late Rik Mayall and Ruby Wax, as well as stars Cliff De Young and Barry Humphries. O’Brien is arguably best known today as the host of Nineties adventure gameshow The Crystal Maze (the experience of which may well inform his latest project).
The run begins in April.
