Let many of us, we’re sure you’re in the full swing of all things Christmas…wait, you’re not and you’re still struggling for those extra ideas? Well, we’ve been scouring the web and High Street for the finest film present ideas that’ll either be something a little different or just right for that TV or film fan you know. So you’ve come to the perfect place as THN are offering up a tantalising array of inspirational gifts ideas!
We should start with the ultimate in modern awesomeness, HBO box-sets with some stunning television that’s changed the way we look at the small screen in the last year or two – with something for everyone’s stocking. We’ve put together a selection from every genre, whether it’s for a fan of comedy, crime, action dramas or classic TV series, there’s sure to be something here for you.
Game Of Thrones
Undoubtedly one of the biggest TV shows ever, Game of Thrones showcases some of the most daring moments in TV and twisted plot shifts. Whether for the ultimate super fan or those yet to discover Game of Thrones, this box set should thrill both – and even I’ve got a lot to catch up on!
Based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire books, this sweeping fantasy saga has continued to be one of the most talked about TV series worldwide. Combining a mythical kingdom with a generation of family feuds, bloody war, treachery, murder, lies and lust, Game of Thrones has defined a world so unique and compelling that any preconceived notions of the genre fall away. It has created an accessible fantasy epic for the small screen and is one of the most watched show on Sky Atlantic.
There’s also a stunning cast in the shape of Peter Dinklange, Sean Bean, Charles Dance, Lena Heady and Kit Harrington amongst many others in their fight to rule the seven kingdoms of Westeros.
True Detective
If you haven’t seen it yet, then you definitely need some True Detective in your life. It’s the proper meaning of ‘must-see’ and also deservedly an Emmy Award winning drama. Not only is it unsettling, it’s also completely addictive as we join Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Rust Cohle and Martin Hart respectively.
Our protagonists are unusual partners but on a sinister case that takes place in the pits of rural Louisiana, contending with religious zealots and satanic sacrificial murders. Nic Pizzolatto has created a visual treat with every episode shot on 35mm film by director Cary Fukunaga, who uses the southern Louisiana landscape to achieve an eerie film noir effect, with the brilliance of True Detective being that it asks viewers to question everything. It’s time-shifting structure creates an intriguing show that has won over critics and viewers around the world and really does keep you guessing right until the very end. You want this in your life.
Girls
If you haven’t seen it yet, then Girls is a remarkable change in the way we view honesty in drama and also modern day reality as it’s hugely relevant and – although occasionally mad – completely normal. Girls has established itself in a short space of time as one of the most original shows on the small screen as it follows Hannah (Lena Dunham) and her four friends, Marnie (Alison Williams), Jessa (Jemima Kirke) and Shosanna (Zosia Mamet).Through them, we experience their life as they stumble their way through awkward situations and hilarious dilemmas in love, life and work.
It’s completely unique and probably for the older teen or 20-something but, in all honesty, anyone with an open mind should delve into it.
Veep
If you’re into your satircal or political-based TV shows – and loved In The Thick Of It – then Veep is where you want to head next. It’s midterms in the White House and we’re back with our Vice President and her long list of not-so-important duties. Join Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Selina Meyer and witness her hilarious escapades in Veep: The Complete Second Season.
It’s created by the brilliant Armando Iannucci, as we go inside the American political system, alongside being a politically (in)-correct look at the daily successes and disappointments of being second in command. It’s really, really good and something you shouldn’t over look!
Boardwalk Empire
Know someone who loved The Sopranos or Goodfellas? Well, we think Boardwalk Empire will be right up their street! The back-stabbing criminality and debauched scheming are the order of the day in this critically acclaimed action-packed and explosive drama series from esteemed writer Terence Winter (The Sopranos) and director Timothy Van Patten.
This series follows the life and times of “Nucky” (Steve Buscemi) in the early 1920s. This visually stunning gangster epic features some of the most awe-inspiring production design ever seen on screen along with an authentic soundtrack that will immerse viewers in the period. An ideal addition to any Christmas stocking this year!
