The Horror genre has undergone a variety of changes over the past few years, with a large portion of those changes occuring as a result of the rise of technology and social media. However, the horror genre has always been especially unique, largely due to the fact that the brand is easily reinvented and reinterpreted for each generation. Wes Craven’s SCREAM franchise, is something that has cleverly poked fun at the varying trend’s and characteristics of the genre, whilst also paying homage to the classic elements of what has made horror so appealing for almost a century.
However, after four fantastic instalments of the genius meta-horror franchise, the announcement that MTV were developing a television show was met with a mixed response. Although remake’s and reboot’s are a common and heavily prominent aspect of the entertainment industry (something the series itself has referenced), the idea can still be a sensitive thing for fans of beloved properties.
Following recent developments that the new TV series may delve into the supernatural, as well as possibly abandoning SCREAM’s signature ‘Ghostface’ killer, it has now been revealed that it may also be getting a new title. MTV are rumoured to be re-titling the show ‘Hush’ in order to avoid confusion with Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Horror anthology Scream Queens. Although this does make a certain amount of sense (and Hush really isn’t a bad title either), it does beg the question of why the show is even based on the SCREAM property in the first place. Of course, it’s possible that (Hush?) could be keeping its cards close to the blood-stained vest, and it will indeed evoke the beloved spirit of what made original film great…but at this point it’s best to remain cautiously optimistic until we see some footage.
