With excitement levels for the upcoming AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON reaching new-found highs, Marvel have today officially announced Joe and Anthony Russo as directors for the film’s sequels, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – PART 1 and AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – PART 2.
Although rumours of their involvement had been circulating since the end of last month, it’s great to finally have confirmation of the Russos attachment to the two films; the pair having already guided Marvel to box office success with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.
Whilst there’s no news as to whether Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely will again be penning the scripts, having already rejoined the brothers on their follow-up CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, a return would seem likely.
With a host of Marvel films scheduled before the release of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – PART 1 (not least the Russo brothers’ aforementioned CIVIL WAR next year), the landscape of Marvel films is likely to have altered drastically between now and then. However based on what we’ve seen in the films so far (not to mention the comics), it’s fair to speculate that Marvel’s INIFINITY WAR will focus on our heroes efforts to battle intergalactic villain Thanos (Josh Brolin) as he bids to wipe out half of all existence, though nothing has been confirmed.
With Joss Whedon’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON yet to be released, quite what this news means for his future involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains to be seen.
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – PART 1 is planned for release 4th May 2018, with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – PART 2 currently set for 3rd May 2019.
