Is Leonardo DiCaprio set to play in the villain in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained?

This piece of news appeared online yesterday and I merely disgarded it as pure rumour, but then after looking into it I see that the source is that of trade newspaper Variety, so perhaps it does lend some weight. It seems that Leonardo DiCaprio could play the villain in Quentin Tarantino’s next movie, the western DJANGO UNCHAINED. The source is Jeff Schneider over at Variety, who Tweeted the following.

@YoGoldsmith says Leo’s been cast as the villainous Calvin Candie in QT’s DJANGO UNCHAINED. Heard the same last wk but again, NOT CONFIRMED.

@YoGoldsmith is a respected US based journalist, and the word is that DiCaprio is up for the role of evil plantation owner Monsieur Calvin Candie in film, potentially opposite Will Smith who is said to be up for the role of Django. Whast an A-List cast this could end up having, as both Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz are also in line for supporting roles in the movie, as is Britain’s own Idris Elba.

Shooting on the film is set to begin later this year for a 2012 release. I’m saying that it’ll be debuted at Tarntino favourite Cannes next May, just like his last film INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS.

So, what do we think of the casting news? DiCaprio as a villain? This has to be a first…
