Just as THE FIGHTER is about to be released on DVD, star Mark Wahlberg has announced that a sequel is on the way. THE FIGHTER is based on real-life boxer Micky Ward, and Wahlberg, speaking at the Spike TV Guys Choice Awards, hinted that the follow-up may focus on Ward’s fights with Arturo Gatti.
‘We left of the Arturo Gatti fights for a reason’ said Wahlberg whilst collecting an award. ‘Because that’s for THE FIGHTER 2. We’re going to do the Ward-Gatti trilogy.’
Original director David O. Russell has yet to indicate if he will return, though this could be likely due to the critical praise he received for the movie, which also starred Christian Bale.
