Joe Cornish also in running for Die Hard 5
THN is having a proper geek out over news that Joe Cornish, director of ATTACK THE BLOCK and one half of Adam & Joe, has joined the race to direct DIE HARD 5.
We previously reported that John Moore (MAX PAYNE) was the front runner, but according to DEADLINE.COM Fox have added three new names to the picture; Justin Lin (FAST FIVE), Nicolas Winding Refn (DRIVE) and indeed, Cornish (pictured here with a very handsome journalist indeed… oh come on, how often am I gonna get the chance to do that?).
Lin is an obvious choice, proving his chops with the awful but undeniably successful FAST & FURIOUS series. But as he’s attached to TERMINATOR 5, Fox may look else where.
Refn is a surprise choice, as he is something of an indy darling. He directed BRONSON with Tom Hardy (mmmm…) and the upcoming DRIVE with Ryan Gosling (mmmmmmmmm….) Carey Mulligan (MMMMMMMMMM…..) and Christina Hendricks (MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!) He is set to collaborate with Gosling again with ONLY GOD FORGIVES next year, so if he does get hired to helm DIE HARD 5, one can only hope he’d rope in that gorgeous Gosling as a villain.
Then we have Joe Cornish. Having only one film under his belt, he seems a very unlikely choice. But ATTACK THE BLOCK has received rave reviews and, being one half of my favourite comedy double act, he could certainly charm the producers into signing him up. He’s seen by many as the new Edgar Wright (SHAUN OF THE DEAD, SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD), with whom Cornish is writing the new TINTIN. So he has big shoes to fill. Luckily, he’s a very large man.
So I maybe biased, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for his success. Even if it means we don’t get Gosling (mmmmmmm).
