Paul Schrader to direct Bret Easton Ellis’ Bait

Variety has reported that Paul Schrader – best known for writing the screenplays for such films as TAXI DRIVER and RAGING BULL – has signed on to direct BAIT, the long-awaited film from cult writer Bret Easton Ellis. Schrader has reportedly replaced Jonas Pate (LIAR), who was previously attached to the project.

The script was first brought to light over two years, and sounds suitably nihilistic, a common trait in Ellis’ work. BAIT tells the story of a disgruntled waiter, who becomes increasingly frustrated with the rich folks that surround him. After a group of youths humiliate him, he sneaks aboard their yacht, kills the captain, and whilst they are in the water, unleashes a school of sharks upon them (seriously).

Ellis’  work has also been given the silver-screen treatment previously, most notably 2000’s AMERICAN PSYCHO.
