New ‘Shrek’ movies could be on the way

Shrek

A month or so ago, Dreamworks Animation was snapped up by NBC Universal for quite a lot of money ($3.8 billion). Following the transition of ownership, the studio is now looking at the many Dreamworks properties, and which ones they can revive. Top of the list is Shrek, and the word over at Deadline is that a fifth Shrek movie, as well as a sixth and seventh and eighth if the next is successful, could go ahead in the very near future.

Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri will now have creative control and “he is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect Shrek and take a lot of the existing DreamWorks franchises and add value as we create new franchises,” so says NBCUniversal chief Steve Burke.

The film series, which has comprised of five movies so far, including a spin-off, Puss In Boots, has been hugely successful. Combined, they have grossed a whopping $1.4 billion worldwide (Shrek 2 is the most popular with nearly a third of that total), so it’s not hard to see why the new owners want a new movie, or indeed movies over the coming years.

We’ll bring you more details as we get them. What do you think about the plans to bring a new Shrek film to screens?
