If you live in North America, there is the opportunity to go and see legendary Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven‘s new film , the thrilling and funny Elle at your local multiplex right now. We saw the film a few weeks ago and it is easily amongst the filmmaker’s best work, and has potential to do well this coming awards season. Well, on the production trail for the that film, the director of such films as Robocop, Basic Instinct and Total Recall (the original) has been chatting about big Hollywood plans to remake one of his best films from the 1990s, the sci-fi actioner Starship Troopers.

Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing a re-telling of Robert Heinlein’s original novel on which Verhoeven’s very daring movie was based.

Speaking to IndieWire of his original work, the filmmaker admitted that he got away with a lot of the violence, sex and political incorrectness at the time.

“We succeeded to do this movie, that is so subversive, and politically incorrect [because] Sony changed [leadership] every three, four months. Nobody looked at the rushes because they had no time because they were fired every three, four months. So we got away with it because nobody saw it,” he said.

The new film will apparently stick closer to the source novel, rather than Verhoeven’s vision, but the filmmaker had some very positive thoughts on that decision. “We really, really tried to get away from the novel, because we felt that the novel was fascistic and militaristic. You feel that going back to the novel would fit very much in a Trump Presidency”.

“We wanted to do a double story, a really wonderful adventure story about these young boys and girls fighting, but we also wanted to show that these people are really, in their heart, without knowing it, are on their way to fascism.”
