Han Solo delay? Is the next stand alone Star Wars movie being pushed back a full seven months?
More on the Han Solo delay below.
With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story being the run-away success story of the year (it was the second highest grossing film of the year Stateside after Finding Dory), attention is shifting to forthcoming Star Wars movies. While Star Wars Episode VIII will be the next film to hit cinemas this coming December, a stand alone Han Solo movie is also set to kick off production very soon.
However, rumours have surfaced that the film’s release date could be delayed from a May 25th, 2018 release to a December 13th, 2018 debut.
The rumours come from MakingStarWars.net who report that the Han Solo film will shift back 7 months after they heard a rumour from the ‘theater industry.’ This does, of course, make sense. After all, both The Force Awakens and Rogue One have made a ton of money in the December release slots, so it does question why they would not release the second stand-alone story before the Christmas break too.
“We are actually very close. We are going to start shooting in February.”
That was what Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said to the BBC recently, and recent press releases concerning the film only list it as having a general 2018 release.
Rogue One was the biggest film at the 2016 box-office in the UK after taking £50.7M, overtaking previous holder Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them in the final hours of the year. In North America it has taken over $440 million and around $790 million in total around the world.
Disney, who own Lucasfilm, had an almighty year at the movies last year. The studio managed to bring in $3 billion from just 16 films in a year which is being called the biggest earner for motion pictures ever.
The planned Han Solo movie will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and will see Hail, Caesar star Alden Ehrenreich play the iconic role of Han Solo, with Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and Emilia Clarke in an undisclosed role.
We’ll bring you more on the Han Solo delay as it comes our way.
