The Discovery trailer: Netflix visits the afterlife in new original.
Netflix have unveiled the new trailer for The Discovery, an intriguing new film set to hit the streaming service in March. You can see The Discovery trailer in our player below.
The Discovery stars Robert Redford, Rooney Mara, Jason Segel, Riley Keough and Jesse Plemons and is a love story set in a world where the afterlife has been scientifically proven, and as a result millions of people start taking their own lives to “get there.” Directed by Charlie McDowell and written by McDowell and Justin Lader (The One I Love), the film was produced by Alex Orlovsky of A-LO Films and James D. Stern of Endgame Entertainment, and was co-financed by Endgame Entertainment and Protagonist Pictures. Executive Producers are Julie Goldstein, Lucas Smith, Mike Goodridge, Dimitra Tsingou, Hunter Gray, McDowell and co-producer Erika Hampson.
The Discovery played at Sundance earlier this year where it played to mixed reviews.
Variety said that the film is “never half as suspenseful or emotionally involving as it hopes to be. Stylistically it also falls a little short, with competence but not much character to Norwegian DP (“Rams”) Sturla Brandth Grovien’s widescreen lensing or the other visual design contributions. Like “The Discovery” as a whole, the original score credited to Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans seems like a collection of variably interesting ideas that don’t quite hang together.”
The Guardian wasn’t that keen on proceedings either: “Hitting reset is an understandable impulse, especially after watching a film which starts so promising only to get bogged down in dreary, desultory scenes and confusing plot contortions.”
Alex Billington on First Showing did like what he saw, and called it ‘Stirring Cinema for Intelligent Minds…’ “The film is very low key (and low budget), and doesn’t rely on visual effects or style or anything grandiose. It’s all about the script and the characters and the emotions, and although some of the dialogue seemed a bit too cynical, it never gets boring. The Discovery is a gripping, engrossing film that will leave you with chills more than once. Segel and Mara are convincing in their performances, making the story believable and keeping us captivated.”
Netflix will stream the film everywhere from 31st March 2017.
