Scarlett Johansson & Natalie Portman are frontrunners to play Lisbeth Salander

According to trade paper Variety, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman are both in the running to play the iconic role of Lisbeth Salander in the forthcoming The Girl In The Spider’s Web, the reboot of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series.

We reported the news just yesterday that Sony Pictures are pushing ahead with a complete reboot of the acclaimed Millennium book series created by Stieg Larsson, putting aside the 2011 David Fincher version which starred Rooney Mara in the role as Salander.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web will be the first in the best-selling series to be produced into an English-language film in its initial adaptation.  The previous books in the series have been adapted into Swedish-language films, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was a remake of the Swedish film.  It became a global hit for Columbia Pictures, taking in over $230 million worldwide.

Fede Alvarez is directing the new film for Sony, which is being eyed for an October 2018 release.

There are no official talks with Johansson or Portman as yet, but both actresses are said to be in the mix. We’ll bring you more as we get it.
