The Boss Baby ended Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at the U.S. box-office this weekend. The animated film from Dreamworks Animation dethroned the Mouse House monster, which has now taken over $800 million at the worldwide box-office is just over two weeks.
The Boss Baby opened to $49 million around the country, opposed to Beauty and the Beast‘s $47.5 million, a figure which still secured it the number two spot. This week’s other big opener Ghost In The Shell entered the chart at number three with just $19 million in box-office receipts, a big disappointment despite its largely positive reviews. The Paramount Pictures-housed movie reportedly cost a huge $110 million without the big marketing costs that the studio spent on it, so it has a long way to go to make any kind of profit.
At the number four position is Lionsgate’s Power Rangers, a film that has done well despite its rather lacklustre critics’ responses. With its $14.5 weekend gross, the film has now in the region of $65 million over its ten days of being out there. Rounding out the top five is Warner Bros.’ Kong: Skull Island which has taken a further $8.8 million, rounding its domestic gross up to $147 million.
This week’s other new release, The Zookeeper’s Wife, which stars Jessica Chastain, limped into the top ten at the number ten position with just $3.3 million in the bank. That film did only open on 541 screens nationwide though, which gives it a better screen average than any other film on the list excluding the top two.
