Dreamworks’ ‘The Boss Baby’ clings to top of U.S. box-office

Dreamworks Animation‘s The Boss Baby remained at the top of the U.S. box-office this past weekend, once again pushing away the advances of Beauty and the Beast and new Stateside releases Smurfs: The Lost Village and pensioner heist-comedy Going In Style. The Alec Baldwin-voiced ‘Boss Baby’ took in another $26.3 million over the three days, taking its total haul in North America to $89.3 million. It narrowly fended off Disney behemoth Beauty and the Beast, which managed another $25 million. The live-action version of their 1990s animated classic has pulled in $432.3 million since its release in early March domestically, and over $900 million across the world.

The first of this week’s new releases Smurfs: The Lost Village, released by Sony Pictures Animation, brought in $14 million in its opening weekend, though the Easter break should secure more coffers for the Julia Roberts, Mandy Patinkin and Joe Manganiello-voiced sequel in the coming days. Zach Braff’s Going In Style, which unites Sir Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin, entered the chart at the number four position with $12.5 million following mediocre to poor reviews from critics. The film managed just 44% on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and a paltry two-star review on these pages (read my review at the end of the link above).

The top five was rounded off with Ghost In The Shell, which, in its second week, took just $7.3 million. The Scarlett Johansson starrer has now taken just $31.5 million Stateside and really has to go some to recoup that reported $110 million-plus budget. Reports late last week suggest that Paramount Pictures may be looking at a $60 million loss on the project, an adaptation of the classic Japanese manga. We reviewed the film very positively, along with many other outlets, but the film is not attracting the paying-public.

The rest of this week’s top ten can be viewed below.
