La Cage Aux Folles theatre review: High kick your way through a fabulous evening of cabaret.
La Cage aux Folles theatre review
La Cage Aux Folles is an evening full of music, dancing and singing. The musical is a story with many different strands running through it. Originally written by Jean Poiret in 1973, as a French play, set on the French Rivera.
Albin is brilliantly performed by John Partridge, formerly of EastEnders, a drag artist who is the star of Cage aux Folles. Adrian Zmed portrays Albin’s partner, Georges, the owner of the theatre. Their world is tilted on its axis when Georges son Jean Michele (Dougie Carter) arrives to tell them that he is getting married (to a woman) and the potential in Laws are coming to visit. As the son tries to decide how to introduce his unorthodox family to the potential in laws, chaos ensues as Georges and Albin prepare for the big meet.
La Cage aux Folles theatre review
Albin transforms from the caring ‘mum‘who raised Jean Michele to Zaza, his alter ego, who holds the theatre captive with his excellent singing and dancing. The stage is deftly transformed from apartment into theatre, and is filled with the show stopping chorus girls who high kick their way through the show.
The evening starts with the curtain rising on the Cage aux Folles and you are transported to the show in the south of France by Georges who comperes the show. John Partridge as ZaZa engages in full audience participation, so you are not just watching the show, you are part of it. The scenes are slick and quick changing along with the marabou and spangles on the choruses outfits. The drama of life in a family unfolds and the musical is highly polished with a foot tapping evening. The whole auditorium were engaged with the show with a standing ovation finale.
La Cage aux Folles theatre review
An excellent lighthearted evening’s entertainment from start to finish. The skill and talent of the actors is very impressive and emotive, this is a brilliant treat of a show and one that is totally unmissable.
