The new version is the first time the work has been adapted for the screen since the 1978 version with Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams and Kevin McCarthy. Before that was the 1956 American science fiction horror film produced by Walter Wanger and directed by Don Siegel. Here’s a little more about the story from the original novel’s synopsis.
On a quiet fall evening in the small, peaceful town of Mill Valley, California, Dr. Miles Bennell discovered an insidious, horrifying plot. Silently, subtly, almost imperceptibly, alien life-forms were taking over the bodies and minds of his neighbors, his friends, his family, the woman he loved — the world as he knew it.
First published in 1955, this classic thriller of the ultimate alien invasion and the triumph of the human spirit over an invisible enemy inspired three major motion pictures.
Johnson has a string of other credits to his name, including Wrath Of The Titans, Red Riding Hood, Conjuring 3 and A Nightmare On Elm Street. There’s also credits for Orphan, TV series Mob City and episodes of The Walking Dead, so he is a pretty decent choice for the new version of the classic novel.
Obviously this is the first time the property has been adapted for nearly 40 years (if you discount the 1990s TV series ‘Body Snatchers’), so expect a big update.
