Robert De Niro Talks ‘The Irishman’ & Why They Went For The Netflix Model

One of my own ‘most anticipated’ for next year, or whenever it is debuted on Netflix, is the ensemble crime movie The Irishman, which is just about to start shooting with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and more amongst the cast. Martin Scorsese is directing the film, which is based on the book ‘I Heard You Paint Houses,’ and it sounds epic.

It will be one of the most expensive movies to being 100% produced by Netflix, and De Niro has opened up as to why he and his peers went for the the Netflix model for the upcoming $100 million film. The movie will utilise special effects to de-age De Niro and his fellow cast members, due to the time frame in which the film is set. He spoke with Deadline.

“We need the money to do it right and it just wasn’t financeable in another way, in the traditional film way if you will. They’re trying to really do it as the best it’s ever been. We’re doing the young stuff first and taking it decade by decade so that later the oldest stuff will be closer to our own age.

So they’re trying to really make it as good as they can make it and that’s the goal that it can be something special that everyone would want to see and see it done as well as it can at this point. I’m excited by it and looking forward to doing it.”

We’re expecting The Irishman to drop online in late 2018 – possibly for an awards-season contention run in select cinemas too. We’ll keep you updated.
