Fassbender For Murphy In Robocop Remake?

Is Michael Fassbender about to step into the metallic shoes of one of cinema’s most iconic heroes? If director José Padilha gets his way, that’s just what might happen. Speaking on Brazilian TV, the ELITE SQUAD helmer hinted that he’s interested in Fassbender for his upcoming ROBOCOP remake. If this were to happen, it would be great news for Robo-fans, as Fassbender has proved himself time and again of late, turning in great performances in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS, and pretty much everything else.

Courtesy of Bleeding Cool, here’s a translation of what Padilha had to say on the matter:

I’ll film Robocop. I’m indeed writing the script, the writer is here with me in Rio, we’ve spent over the last 15 days working together, refining the script.

I’ll be travelling this friday back to LA, bringing this new version to discuss with the studio, and maybe begin with the casting, selecting actors… and the idea is to begin filming in February – February or March. That’s the idea, y’know, we never know in the american movie industry. We’re just delivering the project, but also we depend on the schedule of the actors… it’s tough.

I can’t talk yet, it’s too early to speak, but there are some actors I like. I really like the Fassbender, I’d like to talk to him — I’ll talk to him. There’s a possibility… and there’s a lot of other great actors that would play Robocop. But that’s the idea, to film around January, February, March.

Fassbender would certainly bring a touch of a class to the film as Alex J. Murphy -originally played by Peter Weller – the cop ruthlessly gunned down and swiftly rebuilt into part man, part machine, all cop. The production has to be one of the most controversial remakes to date, as the Paul Verhoeven version remains a 1980s classic – tons of violence, plenty of profanity, and a sly political subtext beneath the gripping action –  can the original possibly be topped?
