Thor Raganok’s Taika Waititi Reportedly In Talks For Akira Remake

With work pretty much done on the forthcoming third movie in the Thor series Thor : Ragnarok, Taika Waititi is reportedly looking at the long-planned Akira remake/ live-action movie that is in active development.

Akira will be a live-action version of anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo’s 6-volume graphic novel, and is being set-up over at Warner Bros. Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way is co-producing the film, according to Deadline, who also spilled some of the plot details for the adaptation.

The story apparently takes place in the rebuilt New Manhattan (as opposed to neo-Tokyo in the source material) where a leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment. Presently, there’s nobody attached in the lead role, which could be a high-profile role for an up and coming talent.

The trade blog says that the intention has always been to make 2 films, each covering 3 books in the series.

The live-action film will still be a little way off as Waititi has already lined-up his next directorial job Jojo Rabbit, a WWII dramedy set to shoot next spring.

Akira was first adapted for the screen in 1988 as an animated movie, the trailer for which you can view in the player below. More as we get it.
