There is some speculation out there that the next film in the Star Wars saga, the one after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which will be Episode IX, will be the last for the Skywalkers and the new trilogy characters. J.J. Abrams has signed up to direct the final installment in the new sequel trilogy, which will start filming next year for a 2019 release.
A new article in Rolling Stone magazine suggests that things may be wrapping up for the current characters, but don’t worry, the Star Wars saga will definitely continue past Episode IX.
Abrams was asked directly if he sees the Skywalkers continue past his next movie in the series. He was actually a little non-committal in his response: “I do see it that way, but the future is in flux.”
It does, however, look like we may be losing Daisy Ridley and her character of Rey after Episode 9. She was asked if the character would be seen in movies after Abrams’ next.
She replied:
“No. For me, I didn’t really know what I was signing on to. I hadn’t read the script, but from what I could tell, it was really nice people involved, so I was just like, ‘Awesome.’ Now I think I am even luckier than I knew then, to be part of something that feels so like coming home now. I am really, really excited to do the third thing and round it out, because ultimately, what I was signing on to was three films. So in my head, it’s three films. I think it will feel like the right time to round it out.”
Whatever happens in the future for the franchise it’s bound to be exciting as there are tons of options, characters, and worlds for filmmakers to explore.
There’s a lot more on this over at Rolling Stone. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens on December 14th.
