Original ‘Robocop’ Screenwriter Planning Direct Sequel

Ed Neumeier, screenwriter of the original 1987 Robocop, is reportedly planning to write a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s film, potentially ignoring everything that has come since, including that remake from 2014.

UK website Den Of Geek managed to spot a recent interview with the writer. “It’s nice that people are still interested in RoboCop and they have me working on a new one at MGM right now so maybe we’ll get another one out of it,” says Neumeier in an interview with Zeitgeist magazine.

“We’re not supposed to say too much. There’s been a bunch of other RoboCop movies and there was recently a remake, and I would say this would be kind of going back to the old RoboCop we all love and starting there and going forward. So it’s a continuation really of the first movie, in my mind. So it’s a little bit more of the old school thing.”

Robocop spawned a bunch of sequels and that aforementioned remake, as well as countless continuations in the comic-book world. The potential sequel is obviously in the very early stages of development, but we’ll keep you posted on anything new.
