It might just be me, but as much as I see aliens in films I’m always left somewhat unsatisfied by them. The overly advanced technology and the inconceivable anatomical structure of the extraterrestrials always makes me wish I could just be looking at a Marvin The Martian type character. Retro aliens seem like more fun to me and so I’m pretty pleased to hear that the new MEN IN BLACK will be going back to basics.
The MIB films to me have always been a source of fun viewing and how better to increase my enjoyment by including your bread and butter retro alien as well as some good old-fashioned time travel.
Distinguished make up artist Rick Baker talks about MEN IN BLACK 3. ‘We go back to the Men in Black headquarters of the ’60s. The first thing I said is that we should have retro aliens, not aliens of 2012. More based on B-movies of the ’50s and ’60s. So, a lot of the aliens are based on that. Space suits with fishbowl helmets and ray guns.’
The plot will feature Agent J (Will Smith) traveling back in time to team up with Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones playing in present day and Josh Brolin in the past). The franchise will see some newcomers such as Emma Thompson, Nicole Scherzinger, Alice Eve, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jemaine Clement.
MEN IN BLACK 3 will be directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and is set for release on 23rd of May 2012.
