Robert Zemeckis Is Making A New Version Of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’

Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis is reported making a new version of Roald Dahl’s classic book The Witches. The 1973 novel tells the story of a brave young boy and his Norwegian grandmother as they battle England’s witches. It was previously adapted into a film in 1990 with the likes of Anjelica Huston and Rowan Atkinson amongst the cast.

Variety reports the news of a new version and says that Zemeckis is also writing the screenplay for the film.

Here’s the official synopsis for the original book:

Witches really are a detestable breed. They disguise themselves as lovely ladies, when secretly they want to squish and squelch all the wretched children they despise. Luckily one boy and his grandmother know how to recognise these vile creatures, but can they get rid of them for good?

Zemeckis’ next film, Welcome to Marwen stars Steve Carell and is released through Universal later in the year.
