It was recently revealed that Robert Redford is to officially retire from acting with his next film, the David Lowery-directed The Old Man and the Gun. The film is to take a bow at the upcoming fall film festivals before releasing in a prime awards-season spot Stateside, but today Fox Searchlight also announced The Old Man and the Gun UK release date for December 7th.

The film stars Redford (Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, All The President’s Men), alongside Casey Affleck (A Ghost Story, Manchester by the Sea), Danny Glover (Cold Case Files, Lethal Weapon), Tika Sumpter (Final Space, Southside with You), Tom Waits (Seven Psychopaths, The Book of Eli) and Sissy Spacek (Carrie, Badlands).
The Old Man & The Gun is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford), from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.

We’re really looking forward to this, even if it is with mixed emotions – Redford was and still is, one of the best actors of his generation, and following the hugely inventive A Ghost Story (a film that I was lucky enough to interview David Lowery for), I can’t wait to see what the filmmaker does with this.
We hope to catch the film at TIFF, but mark your diaries for The Old Man and the Gun UK release date as it’s sure to be one of the highlights of the awards season line-up.
