5 Memorable Pearl Jewelry Moments in Films
As one of the most iconic pieces of jewelry, pearls have made various impactful, memorable appearances on the big screen. Often used as symbolic elements, pearl necklaces as well as bracelets and earrings are often used in movies to represent themes, define characters and even add to the plot. If you are a fan of both movies and the gems of the sea like us, check out our list featuring some of the most memorable pearl jewelry moments ever on film.
- ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ and the Four Strand Pearl Necklace

Not only does Holly, Audrey Hepburn’s character in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ wear one of the most iconic dresses of all time (the strapless Givenchy number many claim to be the best little black dress in history), but her jewelry game is also spot on. While the character wore a wide range of pearls throughout the movie, it was the four string necklace, connected by a Swarovski crystal brooch in the front that made history. Stunning and utterly elegant from the front, with a chic twist in the back: Holly’s pearl necklace fell low on her back, perfectly draped and aligned with the backline of her little black dress.
- ‘The Great Gatsby’ and the Matching Bracelets

Pearls, pearls and more pearls. Daisy Buchanan, the main character played by Carey Mulligan in 2013’s ‘The Great Gatsby’, seemed to follow Coco Chanel’s popular aesthetic “A woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls.” Portrayed in the film as a symbol of opulence and wealth, Daisy is permanently adorned in a plethora of lush jewelry pieces, ranging from gorgeous and very expensive pearl necklaces to drop pendants that adorn headbands. But the most iconic piece of jewelry in the film, which takes place in the 1920’s in Long Island and New York, is a pair of exquisite matching bracelets. Featuring a design that extends over the hand, the pieces feature platinum, as well as diamonds and a ring on the middle finger.
- ‘The Prince and Me’ and the Elegant Royal Piece

‘The Prince and Me’ follows the story of Paige Morgan (portrayed by actress Julia Stiles), who meets new love Eddie, (played by Luke Mably). The two meet in college and it all starts like a typical young love story – except that Eddie has a big secret: he is an actual prince. Julia’s character moves to Denmark to marry her Danish Prince – and as you guessed, pearls are depicted here as a symbol of royalty. Paige prefers simple, yet impactful styles, which is why her single strand pearl necklace paired with glam curls and red lips is one of the most iconic looks in the movie.
- ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ and the Lustrous Oversize Pearl

Not only does this next movie base its own story on a pearly piece of jewelry, but it even carries the gem of the sea in its title. We’re talking about ‘Girl with the Pearl Earring’, where Scarlett Johansson plays Griet, a maid that works for painter Johannes Vermeer (portrayed in the movie by Colin Firth). While the movie is accurately based on a famous painting created in 1665, little is known about the wearer of the jewelry piece – but the movie helps us fill in the story. The maid becomes the muse and she and the painter fall in love, despite him being married. Prior to finishing his art piece, the artist presses the large, lustrous pearl earring into his lover’s ear in a powerful, symbolic scene.
- ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and the Pearly Makeover

‘The Devil Wears Prada’ (2006) is definitely one of the top must-watch movies when it comes to fashion. Anne Hathaway portrays Andy, who is in dire need of a makeover. One of Andy’s most iconic looks in the movie is no other than her black and white outfit, complete with a tweed Gatsby hat. Mixing casual and crisp elements, the look comes with an impressive mish mash necklace in an ultra-long length, complete with Chanel’s logo, a variety of pendants and pearls of different sizes. The viewer is in awe: Andy, the recent college graduate who landed her dream job at Runway magazine, has completely transformed her style from dowdy to ultra-glamorous and fashion-forward – and the pearl jewelry piece is the best example of just that.
