Pacific Rim Pushed Forward

It’s directed by Guillermo Del Toro. It’s the most anticipated monster-smashes-everything movie since CLOVERFIELD. And it’s hitting screens a full two months earlier than previously announced. Yes, Del Toro’s mysterious yet enticing PACIFIC RIM is now set for release on May 10th, 2013.

Del Toro has a bevy of experience bringing monsters of every shape and size to the big screen. His last film as director, HELLBOY 2, featured all manner of bizarre trolls and goblins, and his masterpiece PAN’S LABYRINTH boasted one of the most unnerving creatures ever to grace the movies in the Pale Man. His visual style is so striking that, were it not such a mouthful, “Del Toro-ian” would already be an adjective. A great deal is still unknown about PACIFIC RIM, but the combination of monsters and Tokyo suggests a GODZILLA vibe, a franchise Del Toro has stated his admiration for.

The cast is equally impressive. Headlining the film are three of 21st century TV’s biggest and best: SONS OF ANARCHY’s Charlie Hunnam, IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA’s Charlie Day , and Stringer Bell himself, THE WIRE’s Idris Elba. The great Willem Defoe and BABEL’s Rinko Kikuchi fill out the team. While we wait patiently for more details, IMDb’s synopsis is more than enough to get a nerd’s mouth watering: “When an alien attack threatens the Earth’s existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace”. Del Toro-esque?
