Eminem’s Southpaw Comes Out Fighting

After a stop-start pre-production hell, it seems that Eminem (Marshall Mathers to the grown-ups) will finally get his SOUTHPAW to the big screen. Dreamworks had previously dropped the project, but MGM have picked it up, with Sony set to distribute.

SOUTHPAW – Mathers’ first role since 2002’s 8 MILE – follows a welterweight left-handed boxer who becomes a champion, only for his life to be struck with tragedy. It’s safe to assume he will stage some predictable comeback in both life and the boxing ring. Hardly fresh material (and let’s not forget, Rocky Balboa was a southpaw, too). However, Mathers proved his worth in 8 MILE, and has written this alongside SONS OF ANARCHY creator Kurt Sutter. Additionally, it will be directed by TRAINING DAY helmer Antoine Fuqua, so the film could show promise yet.
