The Smurfs Writers To Breathe New Life Into Popeye

Sony Pictures Animation have confirmed the writers of the summer blockbuster hit THE SMURFS are to tackle the much beloved comic-strip and animated creation POPEYE. The spinach munching character is famed for his huge forearms and continued rescue attempts of true love Olive from his arch enemy Bluto.

Jay Scherick and David Ronn will attempt to give the iconic sailor man another chance at a big-screen movie after Robert Altman’s 1980 effort that starred Robin Williams as the title character. That film has gone on to become a cult classic but was a huge box-office failure on it initial release. Sony Pictures President Bob Osher commented:-

Scherick & Ronn have a remarkable talent in re-energizing beloved characters. As they demonstrated with ‘THE SMURFS,’ they embrace the iconic characteristics of these timeless characters and craft a story that really engages moviegoers today.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
