During the 1970s, Ted Bundy was one of the most prolific serial killers in American history. He eventually admitted to causing the brutal deaths of 36 women but, in all likelihood, he probably killed more than 100. Many were never found.
It’s a story that’s pre-occupied director Joe Berlinger for a number of years. His four part documentary series, Conversations With A Killer:The Ted Bundy Tapes debuted on Netflix earlier this year. Now he follows up with a dramatised version, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, a re-creation told through the eyes of Bundy’s girlfriend, Liz Kloepfer. The title is a direct quote from Judge Edward D Cowart (played in the film by John Malkovich) as he delivered the death sentence at Bundy’s trial.

Zac Efron takes the role of Bundy and, talking to THN’s Freda Cooper, Berlinger reveals that the actor needed a lot of persuasion to accept the part. He also explains his interest in the serial killer and why he felt the need to make a drama about his story, as well as a documentary.
