Here’s a trailer for the hotly-tipped awards contender Clemency, a film set to debut in cinemas later this year following a successful run on the festival circuit. Clemency is written and directed by Chinonye Chukwu and stars Alfre Woodard.

Years of carrying out death row executions have taken a toll on prison warden, Bernadine Williams (Alfre Woodard). The emotional wedge in her marriage grows. Memories of a recently botched execution plague her daily. As she prepares to execute another inmate, Bernadine must confront the psychological and emotional demons her job creates, ultimately connecting her to the man she is sanctioned to kill.

Writer/Director Chinonye Chukwu spent four years researching for Clemency. Motivated to tell this story after Troy Davis was executed in a US State prison in 2011, Chukwu was grappling with what happened and about the people who actually had to carry out the execution.

“I spoke with six different wardens, interviewed corrections officers, Lieutenants and regional directors about their experiences working in prisons and in death row facilities around the country. I spoke with men currently on death row and one man who was exonerated from death row, after being incarcerated for 28 years for a crime he did not commit,” she says.

The film starts to roll out into cinemas from 27th December.

Here’s the brand new trailer.
