This has popped up before, but new rumours have surfaced in regards to a follow-up to one of Jim Carrey’s biggest movies, The Mask. A source, albeit ‘a less than trustful source’ over at Movieweb, has heard that a sequel might be in the works to attempt to bring Carrey’s Stanley Ipkiss back to the screen in a new film. The film was based on the Dark Horse Comics property of the same name and we did hear a little while back that a female reboot might be in the works which, we are assuming wouldn’t bring back the Stanley Ipkiss character. More on The Mask sequel news below.
The Mask was released 25 years ago back in the summer of 1994 with the likes of Cameron Diaz and Peter Greene amongst the cast. It was actually Diaz’s first major film role, but it is not known as to whether she would return for a new outing should it happen.
The Mask revolved around Carrey’s character of the unassuming Ipkiss who finds a mystery that transforms him into a rubber-faced yellow-suited gangster. From a reported $23 million budget, the film grossed over $350 million around the world. The movie did spawn a sequel – a stand-alone one with Jamie Kennedy, Son of the Mask, 11 years later, but unfortunately, the film didn’t match the acclaim or success of the original movie.
Jim Carrey will next be seen in the Sonic The Hedgehog movie in the early part of next year, a new trailer for which was released just last week.
In terms of The Mask sequel news, we currently have no further news on ‘The Mask 2’, or whatever it may be called if it does go forward, but we’ll update you as and when. For more on the new rumblings, hit the link to Movieweb above.
