The potential director for the next movie in the current Star Trek movie series has been named. That man in negotiations is Noah Hawley, known for his work on the series Legion and his impressive Lucy In The Sky, a Natalie Portman-led sci-fi movie which has been doing well on the festival circuit. Deadline reports the news that Hawley is in final talks to helm the new movie, which is thought, though not confirmed, to be in the same series as the movies with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban.
The trade says that the film is not the Quentin Tarantino Star Trek project we’ve been hearing about so much over the past few months.
The current Star Trek series kicked off with a couple of movies directed by none other than J.J. Abrams, Star Trek in 2009, and then a sequel Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013. The last movie to be released in that series was 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, which was helmed by Justin Lin, who is currently hard at work in post-production on the ninth Fast and Furious movie. That film scored a huge $335 million at the box-office, but is actually the lowest of all of the current movies, even though it was largely met with critical acclaim.
As well as the aforementioned, Hawley has also worked on the likes of Bones, My Generation and The Unusuals, and as writer, producer, director and showrunner on the much-loved TV series Fargo. Now that’s an already impressive back-catalogue of projects.
There’s no news on when the new Star Trek film will be released, or when in fact it will go before the cameras. We do know that Hawley will write the screenplay as well as direct the new movie, and he will also produce alongside J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot.
