Who are the most famous princesses from Disney Movies?

Disney princesses are often the aspiration of many little girls growing up all over the world. The glitz, the glamour, the princes; no wonder so many people are in awe of a Disney princess.

Before we take a look at the most famous Disney princesses over the years, let’s first gauge a better understanding of what a Disney Princess actually is.

How to define a Disney princess

A Disney Princess is a heroine or damsel in distress character who stars in a Disney film.

Typically, a Disney princess has overcome some sort of hardship in their respective movie, making them extremely well-liked.

The characteristics of a Disney princess

Beautiful – when you think of a Disney princess, beauty undoubtedly comes to mind. And, although it’s not necessarily a requirement, Disney princesses do tend to be extremely beautiful.

Kind natured – In a Disney film there is always a villain, however, you will find that this is never a Princess! Known for their graciousness and kindness to all that they meet, it’s no wonder Disney Princesses are looked up to by young girls all over the world.

Beautiful singing voice – No Disney fairy tale is complete without a musical number or 2! With the females taking a lot of the lead roles, having a good set of pipes is a must for a Disney Princess.

Elsa – Frozen

Although not appearing in Disney’s official Disney Princess line-up, a look at the most popular Disney royalty would not be complete without Elsa of Ardenelle.

The voice of one of the most popular song of 2013 (If you’ve not heard ‘Let It Go’ where have you been!?), Elsa has proved to be an icon for young girls everywhere. Elsa is that popular that you can even buy merchandise with her face on it from places such as Popgear.

Cinderella

Arguably one of the most famous Disney movies of all time, the tale of Cinderella centres around our next Disney Princess.

Described by critics as endearing, charming and timeless, Cinderella ticks all the boxes to earn herself a spot in the most famous Disney Princesses. A true rags to riches story sure to inspire any young woman.

Aurora – Sleeping Beauty

If the characteristics of a Disney Princess are kind natured and beautiful, Aurora ticks one of these boxes in just her name alone.

The last fairy tale to be produced by Walt Disney himself before his death, Sleeping Beauty is a classic and a favourite amongst many, proving true love really does exact (after a long nap!)

Ariel – The Little Mermaid

Being the only non-human in the line-up (and out of all the Disney Princesses), Ariel is instantly recognisable thanks to her long red hair and purple mermaid tale.

Quoted as a “character who thinks and acts independently, even rebelliously, instead of hanging around passively while the fates decide her destiny”, she’s more of a heroine than a damsel in distress!

Belle – Beauty and the Beast

Another classic Disney Princess is Belle of Beauty and the Beast. Wanting to abandon her mundane village life in favour of adventure, Belle shares the same dreams as many a young girl.

With the 2017 remake starring Emma Watson as Belle, this princess is sure to be just as popular with the new generation.
