Interview: Filmmaker Yemi Bamiro on debut feature, Air Jordan documentary ‘One Man and His Shoes’

The film screens at LFF next week.

Set for a home debut at the now-playing BFI London Film Festival is talented South London filmmaker Yemi Bamiro’s debut documentary feature One Man and His Shoes, a movie which looks tells the story of the phenomenon of Air Jordan sneakers. The film offers a look at their social, cultural, and racial significance and how ground-breaking marketing strategies created a multi-billion-dollar business. But it is also a story with a dark side — manufacturer Nike’s high price tag and genius marketing strategy have fuelled a demand so high that since 1989, young people have killed and been killed for a pair.

Earlier this week, we caught up with Yemi for a twenty minute chat about the movie, his own personal connection to Jordans, and how he put the film together.

One Man and His Shoes plays at LFF, getting its domestic premiere on Tuesday 13 October at The BFI London Film Festival in the Debate strand (tickets are still on sale). The film will then be released in cinemas on Friday 23 October and be available on VOD from Monday 26 October.
