5 Of The Best: Horror films to watch on Amazon Prime Video this Halloween

Five suggestions for this Halloween.

We’ve already posted five of our favourite films that are available to watch on Netflix for this Halloween, but what about the scary movies that are currently available over on Amazon Prime? Well, earlier today we scoured the service to see what is available in the UK to stream over the coming weekend, and here are five of our faves.

Midsommar

We recommended Ari Aster’s brilliant Hereditary on our Netflix list, but here’s his follow-up, the superb Midsommar, which was released just last year. Set in Sweden, five friends are headed to a legendary festival that occurs once every 90 years. When there, they discover something more sinister is afoot and they find themselves stuck in the clutches of a pagan cult. A hard watch throughout, Midsommar is a film that will never leave you.

Leprechaun

We head back to 1993 for this classic horror tale from filmmaker Mark Jones, cult-fave Leprechaun. Warwick Davis leads the cast of the movie, playing the title character who discovered that someone has stolen his pot of gold. He focuses his attention on a family, who he believes may be the culprits. They must stay one step ahead of the Leprechaun as he hunts them down to try as he attempts to get back hold of his precious gold.

Baskin

If you want something a little more disturbing, then how about this horror that hails from Turkey. We first Baskin at a film festival five years ago, and it still hasn’t left us. The plot revolves around five police officers who basically wander into hell. Debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015, the film marked the arrival of an exciting new filmmaker to the horror genre, Can Evrenol. Check it out, but be warned, it’s not for the faint of heart.

Countdown

Let’s bring things a bit more up to date and this neat, 90 minute horror-thriller from last year. Countdown revolves around an app which tells its users when they are going to die – to the minute. Obviously, some users have decades to live, but others have a matter of days – or even days. One such user is a nurse who discovers that she will die in just three days time. The film focusses on that time frame where she must discover how she meets her fate, before it is too late.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Another classic, and one of the most profitable films ever made. The Blair Witch Project is a found footage horror that sees a documentary crew disappear into the woods outside the town of Burkittsville, Maryland. They are not heard of again, but their footage gives clues as to what happened to them. The film was reportedly made for a budget between $200,000 and $500,000, and made over $248 million around the world. ‘Blair Witch’ scored itself a sequel a few years later, and even a remake in 2016 .
