‘Ready Player Two’ movie reportedly ‘in the early stages of development’

A Ready Player Two movie is reportedly in the very early stages of development. The sequel novel just literally hit book shelves in time for the holiday season – I certainly hope there is one in my stocking btw – and it looks like a film version may be on the cards, according to a report over at Inverse. Steven Spielberg directed the film version of the first movie, the hugely successful Ready Player One back in 2018, and the follow-up could be heading the same route, though at this early stage we don’t know who will be attached creatively to adapt or direct.

“It’s in the early stages right now,” the book’s author Ernest Cline told Inverse referring to a potential movie version. “Especially since Hollywood is in limbo right now. But I can tell from the experience of making the first movie that everybody had a lot of fun”.

Now, I loved the first book, reading it over the course of just a couple of days while on holiday, and while I have some issues with the film version, I didn’t hate it. It grossed well over $500 million at the global box-office too, so there is clearly an appetitive for this kind of movie, audiences revelling in the combination of nostalgia and adventure. If you liked the movie, then do read the book as there’s so much more packed in there.

Meanwhile, a movie version of Cline’s other novel Armada is in the works over at Universal Pictures. It sounds different – I’m not familiar with the book – and is reportedly Cline’s tribute to films like The Last Starfighter and Star Wars and Iron Eagle. The project is still in the writing stage. Inverse has more on that and the Ready Player Two movie over on their site (hit the link above).
